Each school district in NW Metro Atlanta sets its own calendar. Here are the confirmed first day of school dates for the 2026-2027 academic year across the districts that serve our seven communities.

Teacher pre-planning typically begins the week before the first day of school. Most districts release their full calendar including holidays, early release days, and spring break dates on their official websites. We recommend checking your specific district's calendar for the complete picture.

Getting ready for the school year means stocking up on supplies, clothes, and everything in between. Here is where to find the best options in each of our communities.

Georgia Sales Tax Note

Georgia discontinued its back-to-school sales tax holiday after 2016, so there is no tax-free weekend in 2026. However, many retailers in NW Metro Atlanta offer their own back-to-school sales and promotions throughout July and August. Watch for deals at Target, Walmart, Staples, and local office supply stores. Buying in bulk with other families can also help save on supplies.

Many families in NW Metro Atlanta supplement in-store shopping with online orders. Amazon Prime, Walmart, and Target all offer free shipping options that can save you a trip. Canton

The Canton YMCA provides after-school care and youth programs. Cherokee County Parks and Recreation offers sports leagues at Etowah River Park and other county facilities. The Canton Public Library has a full calendar of after-school activities for children and teens.

Cartersville

Cartersville Parks and Recreation offers after-school programs, sports leagues, and enrichment classes at Dellinger Park and community centers.
