About Canton
Canton, Georgia, is one of the fastest-growing cities in Cherokee County, with a population approaching 40,000 residents. Sitting at the southern tip of the Blue Ridge Mountains along the Etowah River, approximately 40 miles north of Atlanta, Canton combines mountain-adjacent beauty with suburban convenience. The area was originally part of the Cherokee Nation, and after gold was discovered in the region in 1828, Cherokee County was established in 1831 with Canton as its seat.
The city was originally incorporated as "Etowah" in 1833, but the name was changed to "Canton" in 1834. The name was inspired by Guangzhou, China (then known in English as Canton), because local leaders dreamed of establishing a silk industry here. While the silk industry never materialized, Canton became one of Georgia's top cotton-producing cities after the Canton Cotton Mills opened in 1899 and operated for nearly a century. The Marietta and North Georgia Railroad reached Canton in 1879, turning the city into a popular summer resort destination for wealthy southern families escaping the heat of the low country.
Today, Canton is in the midst of a remarkable renaissance. The historic downtown square is experiencing a wave of revitalization with new restaurants, breweries, and shops opening in beautifully restored buildings. Public art installations and murals throughout the city tell the story of Canton's Cherokee heritage and industrial past. The city has been recognized for its rapid but thoughtful growth, balancing new development with preservation of its historic character.
Canton's growth continues to accelerate with major real estate and infrastructure projects underway. Century Communities launched Brookshire Manor, a ~50-home community with prices from the mid-$600,000s. The Mill on Etowah, a 30-acre mixed-use destination, is bringing retail, restaurants, residences, and office space to the riverfront. The North Street Redevelopment Project will feature a boutique hotel, four-story office building, courthouse expansion, and ground-floor retail. Academy & Main is revitalizing historic buildings for a live/work/play experience. New businesses opening include Hilltop Pizza, Stitch Coffee, Bully Run (smashburgers), Naar Mediterranean Bar & Grill, and Flatlands Bourbon and Bayou (opened July 2026). Whataburger opened its first Canton location on August 28, 2025. The Wing & Rock Fest (19th annual) was held March 21-22, 2026 at Etowah River Park. The Taste & Brews Music Fest is scheduled for September 12-13, 2026. The River Rock Free Concert Series returned for 2026, headlined by Mark Wills in July. The Canton Farmers Market runs Saturdays May 30 through August 29, 2026 at Brown Park. The city is also advancing a $70 million Water Pollution Control Plant expansion, and Cherokee County received $26.5 million in state infrastructure grants. The Hickory Flat Highway LCI update was presented in June 2026.
