About Woodstock
Woodstock, Georgia, with a population exceeding 35,000, is the vibrant hub of Cherokee County and has earned multiple "Best Places to Live" rankings from Georgia Magazine and other publications. The area was originally part of the Cherokee Nation, and pioneers settled here in the early 1830s. The arrival of the Louisville & Nashville Railroad in November 1879 transformed Woodstock into a key shipping depot for cotton and agricultural products. The town was officially incorporated in 1897, named after Sir Walter Scott's novel Woodstock.
Woodstock experienced explosive growth in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. In 2007, it was recognized as the 10th fastest-growing suburb in the United States. Yet even with that rapid development, the city has held onto its character. The historic downtown district, centered around Main Street, has been carefully preserved and revitalized. Brick storefronts house independent restaurants, craft breweries, and boutiques, while the tree-lined streets and gazebo at The Park at City Center give the downtown a classic American small-town feel.
Woodstock continues to grow at a rapid pace. The city is now Georgia's 20th-largest city, and major developments are reshaping the landscape. Sutton Row, a 290-unit luxury apartment community within the Buice Lake master-planned community, broke ground in October 2025 and will begin leasing in late 2026. The Woodstock Mill District, an 11-acre Publix-anchored retail development delivering in late 2026, will bring 118,000 square feet of retail space anchored by a roughly 47,000-square-foot Publix plus six freestanding buildings, designed as a mill-inspired "gateway to downtown" off I-575 and Towne Lake Parkway. The City Center project, a 4-acre mixed-use redevelopment on Main Street, will feature a boutique hotel and a 647-space parking deck. A landmark six-story, 130-room upscale hotel is planned for downtown, announced via letter of intent with developer Southern Ventures. The 200-acre Buice Lake master-planned community is adding hundreds of single-family homes and townhomes. Woodstock received over $10 million in Georgia Department of Transportation grants in July 2026 for major transportation projects, including the Ridgewalk Parkway Diverging Diamond Interchange at I-575. The city is also expanding smart traffic management with GRIDSMART cameras and the Urban SDK platform, and building new roundabouts and pedestrian infrastructure. The city adopted a $21 million budget for 2026, with $50 million in public infrastructure projects and $210 million in private construction underway, including $65 million in new private investment announced at the January 2026 State of the City address. Little River Park, a 110-acre destination that will be the city's largest park, broke ground in August 2025 with an $8 million construction contract, with 244 boardwalk piles installed and a trail connector to Little River Elementary School underway. The Ridgewalk Parkway Diverging Diamond Interchange at I-575 is a $13.7 million project in partnership with GDOT, with right-of-way acquisition in FY2026. A proposed mixed-use "mini-Battery" project known as The Pitch, featuring a semi-professional soccer stadium and apartments near Costco, was tabled indefinitely by the Woodstock City Council on August 10, 2026, with concerns raised about parking and the Downtown Development Authority's financial role. The Neese Road Improvements project is expected to complete by fall 2026, including a new roundabout at Washington Avenue. The police department is fully staffed for the first time in a decade, two new fire stations are being built, and property tax rates were cut for homeowners. The Woodstock High School is receiving a nearly $18 million, 50,000-square-foot, three-story expansion expected to open soon. The Towne Lake Parkway widening is underway from Woodstock Parkway to the Mill Street roundabout since March 2026. An intersection improvement project at Trickum Road and Highway 92 is moving forward. New local entrepreneurs include Eden Smoothies at 470 Chambers Street and Gustock International Market & Bakery at 9550 Main Street. The Georgia Craft Brewers Festival took place on April 11, 2026, and the Farm Fresh Market is celebrating its 13th season in 2026. The Woodstock Summer Concert Series continued at Northside Hospital-Cherokee Amphitheater, featuring the Pop 2000 Tour with Chris Kirkpatrick of NSYNC on August 8 and closing its 2026 season with the Face 2 Face tribute to Elton John and Billy Joel on September 12. The Family Fun Night Series runs on the third Thursday of each month through August. The Woodstock Mill District project is progressing toward delivery in the second half of 2026. Additional new residential communities include South on Main (townhomes and single-family homes by JW Collection), Forrest Crossing (master-planned community), and Winsome Park (53 homes). The City Center East Parking Deck is now open with 630+ free parking spaces, improving downtown access. The I-575/Ridgewalk Parkway Diverging Diamond Interchange is approximately 94% complete and will significantly reduce congestion on a corridor serving roughly 30,000 vehicles daily. A new deputy police chief was named, and Creekview High School's FFA chapter earned national 3-Star status, the highest honor from the National FFA Organization. The Woodstock Visitors Center celebrated its 25th anniversary in August 2026. At the historic train depot, Fire & Stone Italian Pizza Kitchen opened December 16, 2025, incorporating the restored caboose, while the Adair Park district continues to add dining and shopping with Roberto's Deluxe (led by a Prime 120 chef), Kale Me Crazy, Cultivate Food + Coffee, and Project Optical. The Adair Park district is adding Paloma Tequila and Tacos, Isabella's Mediterranean, and Oishii Sushi Noodle Bar, while new restaurants and a gym are planned in the Hickory Flat Retail buildings on Hickory Road. On the parks front, Dupree Park has an approved master plan calling for a renovated playground, basketball half-courts, a 7,700-square-foot skatepark, and a BMX pump track, and Phase 2 renovations at the Downtown Playground were approved by City Council in July 2026 with work beginning in September. Woodstock's Fire Station 28, the city's third fire station, broke ground in September 2025, and registration for the annual Scarecrow Invasion opened September 1, 2026.
Woodstock's location on I-575 just north of I-75 puts it within easy reach of Atlanta while maintaining its distinct identity. The city is known for its exceptional quality of life, strong schools, and active outdoor culture. The Noonday Creek Trail and Blankets Creek Trail systems connect neighborhoods to downtown and offer miles of paved paths for walking, running, and cycling. In August 2026, Trickum Road traffic patterns shifted between Belles Lane and Camden Park Drive as part of ongoing roadway improvements, and Creekview High School's FFA chapter was named a 2026 3 Star Chapter, the highest honor from the National FFA Organization.
